Authorized Sentences for Petite Larceny and Grand Larceny
In accordance with the Criminal Law of the People’s Republic of China, a person convicted of larceny shall be sentenced to imprisonment for a term of which the maximum is less than ten years. In the case of petite larceny, the authorized sentence is imprisonment for a term of less than three years; in the case of grand larceny, the authorized sentence is imprisonment for a term of at least three years but shall not exceed ten years.
The Criminal Law also specifies threshold ranges of the value of the stolen property, i.e., RMB 1,000 to 3,000, for the conviction of petite larceny, and RMB 100,000 to 300,000 for the conviction of grand larceny. The specific thresholds are based on local policies.
